For this you will need a sharp needle (one with a pointy end) and you will be using a single strand of floss.
come out in the of the middle hole in the first leg
leave a little bit of thread hanging out the back
go down into the top hole of your first leg then came back up through the bottom of your first leg (where you would normally start)
go back down into the middle of the first leg
come back up into the bottom of the first leg
then go back down into the top of your leg
come back up at the bottom right corner to make the first part of your second leg
then again to make it equal two threads
go to the back - this is where the sharp needle comes into play - go through your stitches not behind - once ..
..then again one more time
snip thread fairly close to stitchsit back and admire your work : )
I tried to make this as clear as possible - if you have any questions I will try my best to help.
Hope this makes your stitching more enjoyable as personally I am not a big fan of knots, most of the time they come undone or look to bulky.

Thank you for this info. I have also used one strand of thread but never really understand how to start the stitch. Now I know thanks to you =D

Hi Amanda, Thank you so much! I tried this and it worked so well that I'm going to frog all those stitches that I tied with a knot. A few of the knots are already pulling out
ReplyDeleteThat's a really neat trick, I will definitely be trying that one next time. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat description! Thank you so much.

I just want to make sure I'm clear on your directions: when stitching the second leg, is it exactly as you did for the first? Two half stitches, then one full? Or is it two full stitches? This is a wonderful tutorial, stitches look so lovely, and I want to be sure I follow exactly. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteIs this so there’s no threads going across the back of your linen? Great idea! That always bothered me!
ReplyDeleteDo you have any ideas about how to do single French Knots? I have a project that requires several of them in a short row and I don't want the thread to show through on the front if I carry it in a continuous row. Thanks.

Thank you so much. I was having no end of trouble with the piece I’m working on due to isolated stitches. I’m working with 14 count so it’s not quite the same process but I’ve adapted it slightly and it’s working a treat.
ReplyDeleteHi. I live in Canberra, Australia, ( I am 74 years old and male), and have become a proficient cross-stitcher. I want to thank you for you post about isolated stitches, as it was very helpful to me. With your method, I came up through the centre hole of the square, then down into the bottom right corner, then back up through the top left corner and back into the middle. The I came up in the bottom right and finished in the the top left. Then I simply did two stitches across from bottom left to top right, and it looks good. I finish my "crosses" differently to you. My first one is top left to bottom right and the finishing cross is the other way. With the pattern I have just finished, your method was really helpful in finishing the work, so thanks again. It is an Amish themed scene of "Grandmother's House", with two rows of single stitches as a "border" at the top of the design. Your method works well.
